Tommy, what do you personally enjoy most about being the vice president of Hotel Operations?
Enjoyment for me is exceeding employee expectations. A couple times a month, I walk around with gift cards and do random inspections, whether it be a room, an office, or specific work. It's rewarding to be able to recognize employees who are meeting and exceeding our expectations, and bringing joy to people's lives.
This is something I've always found enjoyable and valuable. By "valuable," I mean it motivates me to do more and do better. When it comes to guest letters, turning things around when issues arise for guests, or hitting financial goals, these are always very enjoyable.
Achieving goals requires many strategies. You have yearly goals, which are composed of monthly, quarterly, and weekly goals. You have to plan these out, adjust, and adapt when things go awry and are not in line with your objectives. Hitting goals is definitely very enjoyable.
The last thing I'd say is enjoyable is the culture of working in hospitality in Las Vegas. Working at a casino and resort, you're the go-to person. This job requires you to be readily available; you'll get a call, even at 4 AM, if something's going wrong.
You're the person who is constantly needed, even when things are going great. This is enjoyable to me, not from the perspective of always being needed, but from the perspective of being woven into the fabric of something so significant. You are a part of many different things, seeing them come to fruition.
You see things play out, hopefully in the way you intended. If not, you pick yourself up, try again, and learn from it. That's enjoyment for me.
