A Day In The Life Of A Physician At An Outpatient Practice

A physician in outpatient practice typically works a full day, "from 7:00 AM to 8:00 AM and then goes all day, uh, until about four, sometimes five," seeing "anywhere from 20 to 40 patients," and managing prescriptions and patient inquiries. Weekend "call" duties are also part of the job, but evenings allow for personal time and preparation for the next workday.

What does the day of the life of a physician look like?

It depends on whether you're inpatient or outpatient, and what area of medicine you're in. But typically, for the most part, since I'll be in outpatient, which is just a clinic, for the rest of my life, more than likely.

So, typically, you show up to clinic starting around 7:00 AM to 8:00 AM, and then it goes all day until about four, sometimes five. This depends on the specialty you go into. Depending on the specialty, you can see anywhere from 20 to 40 patients a day.

And then afterwards, during that same time and treating them, you also manage prescriptions and the in-basket. A lot of patients have questions afterwards about stuff, or something that is a new condition that they have concerns about.

For the most part, most practices on the weekends you'll have what they call call. If some emergency happens, you're the one that gets called. But then after hours, it's like your normal folks. You can just review notes for the next day, or you can hang out with friends and family, or you can just do nothing and veg out. It's great.
