What are your main responsibilities within your current role?

Currently, my main responsibility is running the Dean's office. In higher education, the Dean's office functions much like a CEO's office. We do have a Chancellor who is the top CEO, but within UCLA, we have what we call professional schools.

The business school is a professional school, and the Dean is its CEO. Being Chief of Staff means I get to put out a lot of fires during the day. I might come in and find new emails that completely reprioritize my day.

These issues can range from a student who has an issue and has gone through all program steps, wanting to speak with the Dean, to problems with faculty or other staff. It also means I get to talk to a lot of different people.

I do have people who report to me. For example, the Dean's executive assistant reports to me, as does another staff member. While it's very administrative, it also provides an opportunity to do many different things.

Budgeting is another part of my responsibility that I don't particularly care for, to be frank. But again, it has given me a great opportunity to put some of the skills I learned in undergrad or in the law program to work. I've been able to apply what I've learned here.

I would say my two main responsibilities are ensuring the Dean gets everything he needs in any given week, and also putting out a lot of little fires, and sometimes big fires, that come across the Dean's or my desk.
