What does a day in the life of a DEI manager look like?
I'm constantly keeping up with changes. One day it might be something, and the next day it could be something different. So I'm making sure that I'm constantly aware of the different changes, trends, and current events.
I collect data on our demographics and work with the recruiting team. For example, we might be lacking in women engineers. I share that information, like "We need some more women engineers," or "I've noticed our senior management team needs more women representation." Then we discuss what we can do about it.
I also talk to different colleagues. I started a Slack channel at the beginning of this year, 2022, to facilitate these conversations. It's a lot of talking to colleagues who have been here for a while to understand their experiences and challenges.
This includes figuring out what kind of accessibility would be helpful for them, whether related to disabilities or other needs. I do a lot of research. I think many companies across all industries are currently focusing on DEI.
Networking and connecting with different people is crucial. It's interesting to discover how many commonalities you have with people across different industries. Many companies are going through similar things, so it's important to stay connected.
I'm always connecting with others and learning from different experts. I attend workshops and conferences, virtually or otherwise, to learn more and implement what I learn into my daily work.
