Could you walk me through your career path? I'd like to start with your experiences in college, including any internships or jobs you had before your current role.

I started college at CSU Long Beach in 2014 and was a student there until 2018. I grew up in a household that lived paycheck to paycheck.

I was the first woman in my family to go away to college, and also the first individual in my family to leave home for school. My culture doesn't typically encourage this, especially for young women. Education is encouraged, but often the expectation is to stay close to home.

Advocating for myself was important, so finding community was crucial at a young age. I got involved in anything I could think of. As a comm studies major, I joined the student Communication Association, as it was recommended for majors wanting to get involved on campus.

High school counselors also advised us to get involved on campus, especially if we were away from home. I also became involved with the Associated Students, Inc. (ASI), which is student government.

I was strategic about my involvement. I didn't just want to be a member or attend meetings; I wanted to make a difference. I served as secretary for the Student Communication Association.

I was also the secretary of Disability Affairs for ASI during my junior year. My senior year, I'm blanking on my title, but the main point is that I always tried to be as involved as possible in college.

I still believe that if I'm going to be involved in an organization, it's not just as a member. I want to have a say in how it's run or have a seat on the board. This looks great on a resume and teaches valuable skills.

Extracurriculars and leadership skills are important, especially when balancing work and school. These experiences teach you how to present, take notes, and organize events. Creating community amongst peers is also a valuable skill.

Through ASI, I had the chance to lobby and advocate for students on campus. I even had opportunities to visit other parts of the world because of my campus involvement.

CSU Long Beach has amazing resources for students. While some might see it as a commuter school, you have to take advantage of the available resources. College is an incredible resource, and you should tap into it.
