What a Senior Communications Consultant at a Midwest Health Care System Wishes They Had Known Before Entering the Health Care Industry
Shelly, a senior communications consultant, reflects that a crucial, yet unfortunately learned-through-experience lesson in the healthcare communications industry is the importance of humility: "God gave me two ears and one mouth and I needed to use them in that proportion." This realization, that "you are replaceable," and that one's opinions aren't always sought, shaped their career trajectory.

What have you learned about this role that you wish someone would have told you before you entered the industry?
In my opinion, humility is key in this industry. Unfortunately, that's something you have to learn through experience, not by hearing me say it. I doubt my younger self would have listened to that advice.
You are replaceable. You don't know everything, and often people don't actually want to hear your thoughts or opinions. It took me a long time to realize that I have two ears and one mouth, and I should use them in that proportion.
