What are your main responsibilities within your current role as director of recruitment?

Oh my goodness. Okay, so I wear many hats in this role, but the primary role is really being a manager throughout my time here at Galileo. I have had anywhere between four and six direct reports who are managing massive workloads.

I'm talking all of our data analysis for 15,000 applicants, our entire college recruitment process that has a budget itself of a hundred thousand dollars, marketing, social media, emails, vendor management, all of that. My biggest goal, the biggest point of being a manager is honestly ensuring that your people have the systems to keep themselves organized and successful.

It's also about removing any roadblocks that might come up for them. So that's my number one responsibility as being a people manager. That's what you've got to do.

The other things that I do a lot of are setting overall vision and direction. So I decide what programs and products we use. As a recruiter, it's the decision between Indeed or LinkedIn, or ZipRecruiter, or Handshake, and so on.

I also decide what career fairs we go to, what sort of colleges we're focusing on, how to actually conduct outreach to folks outside of colleges, if we will host events, and what DEI metrics we are holding ourselves accountable to. I also really focus a lot on culture.

Working to make sure that my folks feel included and supported is a top priority for me. I want them to know that they can come to me with anything.

And then, finally, there's a bit of long-term strategic planning. While a lot of our work is just in the weeds right now trying to hire 2,600 people to come work at our summer programs, it's also thinking about where Galileo will be five years down the line. What can I do now to set us up for success when we're not only hiring 2,600, but we're hiring 5,000 people? Basically, making sure we can grow and evolve in a successful way.
