What sort of skills are most important for a job like yours?
I would say the top three skills important for being a brand manager are prioritization, problem-solving, and communication.
Prioritization, and even multitasking, is crucial because as a brand manager, you'll have a lot on your plate. You'll receive requests from your direct manager, senior management, agencies, and other cross-functional parties. Knowing how to prioritize is very important.
There are metrics that help categorize tasks into important/unimportant and urgent/not urgent. I think this would be very helpful for prioritizing your tasks as a brand manager, or even as a student.
Next is problem-solving. Often, unexpected urgent matters will arise during your work. For example, during an event, sales representatives or agencies might call you about a client or customer having an issue. Knowing how to solve problems independently and think critically would be very critical as a brand manager.
Finally, communication. More specifically, negotiation and persuasion are key because you'll have a lot of cross-functional communication. There will be times you have to get senior leadership buy-in. Knowing how to communicate and persuade others to buy into your plans is very critical as a brand manager too.
