Favorite Parts Of Working In The Education Industry As A Secondary Teacher
Sean, a Secondary Lead/Teacher, finds the education world special because "people are there because they want to help, they want to teach, they want to contribute," fostering a collaborative environment that helped Sean develop emotional intelligence. This, coupled with the inherent purpose of the work, makes even the most challenging aspects worthwhile, a stark contrast to the "cutthroat" and "egotistical" vibes experienced in other fields during Sean's diverse internship experiences.

What do you enjoy most about being in your industry?
Working in education, you're surrounded by really good people. I don't want to criticize other industries, as I have very little experience with them.
During the Coral Fellowship, I cycled through eight different internships in ten months. I spent a few months in government, a few months on a political campaign, a few months at a nonprofit, and a few weeks with a business. This gave me a taste of different work environments.
What's special about education is that people are there because they want to help, teach, contribute, and make the world a better place. Even with difficult colleagues, I knew they were at least trying to do something good for the children and communities we served.
My interactions with different fields showed me that the vibe can be quite different, sometimes more cutthroat or egotistical. I really like that about education.
Working in education has helped me grow personally. My ability to develop emotional intelligence has been enhanced by my long tenure in the field. This is something I struggled with initially.
Having a job with a purpose that exists outside of myself is a powerful motivator. It lets me know that even though the work has been incredibly hard, I'm doing something with a clear purpose.
