What skills are most important for a job like yours as an entrepreneur?

The biggest thing is being flexible and adaptable. It's understanding that nothing is linear; things are going to change day to day.

In terms of actual skills, a lot of my team's time is spent on financial modeling and analysis. Understanding not just the economics of projects, but how to make it a financial sale to a customer is important to what we do. It's a lot of financial analysis.

We spend a lot of time on project management as well. Building project management certifications is part of what we look for. Thirdly, having an understanding of the technology is important, though you don't have to be technical. It means understanding the key components so you can speak to them with the customer.

Again, those are the three big skills we look at. Overall, it's the adaptability in an entrepreneurial environment that makes it very good to have team members.

The other thing I always look for in hiring is self-starters. I like people who work well independently. We have been virtual for 15 years, so I'm always hiring people I don't have to babysit.

I want people who are self-starters and will go out there and get things done. So, it's really the ability to step up and say, "Give me more work," that we're always looking for in employees.
