What do you enjoy most about being in your industry?
I really like working at the intersection of education and technology. I've spent pretty much my entire career in some kind of educator role. Even though I'm not in the classroom doing direct service to students, I think it's tremendously rewarding to contribute to systems, structures, and resources that support great teaching and learning.
Being in a place like Khan Academy, where we have fantastic digital resources that students and teachers can use, and that are making a difference for so many learners and educators, is really rewarding. I've also really enjoyed being on the tech side of it, especially because there's been such an explosion in ed tech, particularly since the pandemic. It's a very interesting and dynamic industry to be in.
AI is a big piece of it right now. We're doing a lot of work to design products and resources that use AI in thoughtful, deliberate, and ethical ways, which I think is really exciting. AI is a powerful tool that can be used in really positive or unconstructive ways. It's nice to be one of the good guys.
What I also like about the tech industry is that it's pretty good at respecting work-life balance. The flexibility to work from anywhere is really great. We also have a culture that's focused more on impact than on FaceTime and seat time. If you're getting your work done, you don't have to sit around until five o'clock.
I've really appreciated being trusted to manage my time and get my work done. As long as that continues and I have some flexibility with time, I'm happy.
