How would you describe people who typically thrive in this industry?

I would stick with some of my extroverted trending folks who want to continuously learn and be curious. The industry is constantly evolving in marketing and even in PR. There just has to be that constant will to learn to be able to advise strategically, not only to your own team but to your sales counterparts and any other stakeholders you have.

In addition, a lot of folks are more people-based focused and oriented. At the end of the day, we are doing so many different activities. It is very high energy. People want to know if you can keep up with them. You get thrown into opportunities that may be an 18-hour workday, and you still have to show up and deliver regardless of what that looks like.

You also need to have a lot of stamina. These skills can be acquired over time. It's not that only extroverts thrive in marketing, although that is definitely the home for us. I have a variety of colleagues and former colleagues who were a little more introverted and had amazing strengths to dive deep and think through problems. They would spend hours in minutia to surface data or bring it to my attention.

This allows me to make a quick, educated decision because my teammates who had more of those personalities enjoyed sitting for hours deep in data. That is equally critical. There is really a space and place for everyone in marketing, as well as communications and PR.

Typically, you will find that these fields attract folks who are more extroverted by default.
