What skills are most important for a job like yours?

I would say people skills are important. There are a lot of personalities to work with, so that's one area I'd highlight.

It's a lot of soft skills, as well as hard skills. Soft skills are about emotional intelligence, having a strategic mind, and not working in a silo. You need to be a big-picture thinker and be able to see around corners from a street perspective.

This means understanding the difference between short-term and long-term goals. Everyone develops this over their career; you don't need to have it right out of college. I used to think others developed strategies so quickly.

Now, I'm at a point in my career where I can develop a strategy in a day. This is after 13 years of experience has given me that capacity.

Other hard skills can be data-driven at times. However, a lot of it isn't necessarily a hard skill. It's more about being able to analyze, consume information, and communicate effectively.

This communication needs to be both internal to stakeholders and external. Being a good writer is always valuable. In this day and age, content is king and queen, in various forms like video.

Distilling messaging down is both an art and a science. If you're looking to build skills for marketing, I'd recommend focusing on your writing. My English degree has served me well in both the PR and marketing industries.
