As someone who identifies as a first-generation college student, how has that impacted how you've navigated your career?
This has impacted how I've navigated my career. My parents, who I would go to with anything, didn't know a lot about this topic. They didn't go to college and had more gig-type roles throughout their lives.
They were still very supportive and prioritized me going to college, instilling that in me. However, I didn't really know what to do once I got there or how to figure out a career. This encouraged me to build my own professional network in college and relationships with peers who might have more expertise.
It forced me out of my shell a bit more to build this network. There were definitely moments of feeling behind, seeing others whose parents worked in certain fields and might have opportunities I didn't.
So, don't be too hard on yourself. You can build those relationships without your parents' direct help. LinkedIn is a great resource for that.
