What are your main responsibilities within your current role?
As an investor relations professional for a venture capital fund, my main responsibilities involve LP communications. LPs, or limited partners, are our investors.
My duties include keeping LPs updated with quarterly statements, their account balances, any capital calls, fundraising progress, and general account updates. I also manage our LP portal and CRM, which is our internal system for tracking account details.
This internal organization is crucial. We track everything from capital calls and investment amounts to statuses, account changes, and address updates. We also handle wire confirmations and track all incoming funds.
Capital call dates are very important, as everything ties into our year-end accounting. Accuracy is paramount, so keeping dates and received amounts organized is essential.
Another significant part of my role is the subscription process. When we launch a fund or are actively fundraising, we bring new LPs onboard. This is where they begin the subscription process.
I work directly with LPs to get them subscribed, which involves a detailed application. They provide their capital commitment, name, information, and investor type.
From their investor type, it moves into our AML, or anti-money laundering, process. Here, we verify the investor's identity and check their source of funds. We also confirm they meet criteria like being a qualified purchaser or an accredited investor, depending on the fund's guidelines.
We review their statements, trust documents, LLC operating agreements, and similar documents. It's much more involved than simply wanting to invest; there are many steps involved that might not be apparent from the outside. I understand that some of the terms I use may be unfamiliar to those outside the industry, and I'm happy to explain them further if needed.
