What have you learned about this role that you wish someone had told you before you entered the industry?
I did not realize how important it is to understand the people you work with or communicate with within your organization. This is especially true when working with partner organizations, or even those you're in opposition to or on the other side of certain issues.
Before starting this job, I thought you just had to put your head down, do the research, and have your facts. That's all I thought was needed.
But I learned it's important to understand people and how they work. At the end of the day, people make decisions, and you have to convince them. You need to communicate your work in a way that people agree with you.
Knowing people, on as personal a level as possible, and communicating with those on both sides of issues, as well as your own allies, is quite important to being effective in this job.
