Could you walk me through your career path? Please start with your experiences in college, any internships, or jobs you had before your current role.
In college, I wasn't sure I wanted to be a doctor. I was put off by the pre-med attitude I saw there and considered physical therapy.
I took medical-related courses, but not specifically for medicine. At the end of college, a mentor recommended I seriously consider medical school, saying I really liked the subject matter.
I began taking it more seriously and shadowing doctors who practiced medicine in a way I admired, which was more integrative or holistic. I became more interested and started doing research with like-minded people. Research is an important part of building a resume for medical school.
I applied to and was accepted into medical school. During medical school, I took some time to do more research, which is not unusual but not the norm. Now, I'm doing my residency in psychiatry.
Ultimately, I want to be a practicing psychiatrist and work in the integrative psychiatry space. During residency, I'm gaining diverse experiences, from working in hospitals and community clinics to potentially doing research projects. This allows me to eventually focus on what I want to concentrate on long-term in my career.
