Who Thrives In Education, Says A Faculty At Chandler Gilbert College

Robert, a faculty member at Chandler-Gilbert Community College, finds that successful community college teachers aren't defined by a specific personality type, but rather by "a passion for learning and sharing knowledge," which allows them to engage students effectively despite lacking the fame and accolades of colleagues at research universities. How would you describe people who typically thrive in this industry?

I'm not sure when I looked at that question. I have no idea.

I think of my colleagues, and there are people who are so introverted that watching them talk to colleagues is a struggle, but they are great teachers. Then there are people who are incredibly extroverted and are great teachers, but in different ways.

I guess the one thing that maybe ties them together is that they have a passion for learning and sharing knowledge. I think that's really important about being a successful faculty member at a community college.

We don't get the accolades or the fame of our colleagues at research institutions. People generally aren't calling us to come and present at conferences, speak at the UN, or make statements to the New York Times.

But because we have that passion for learning and sharing what we learn, we're able to engage students in a different way. So, the personality type can really be anything. Again, it's just a passion for knowledge and a passion for sharing it.
