Q11: Significant lesson – career

What is one lesson that you've learned that has proven significant in your career?

I think it's just being transparent with families. Sometimes it's not going to be the outcome that you want, but being honest and loyal to your students and families, and letting them know exactly what they're getting themselves into, has been a key for me.

Sometimes that means turning students away because of certain situations. But I think having that in your mindset, of knowing that, being transparent, knowing exactly what to provide to students, and then having them make that decision, has made my job both harder and easier.

We don't want to turn anyone away, but we want to make sure it's the right path for students and what their options are. Understanding what other options are available for students is a key.

It's going to make me successful knowing what's in your territory. Just because you work from one university doesn't mean you can't learn about the universities around you and community colleges. That's going to help you determine what is best for that family.

By you giving those options, the families will appreciate it. They'll know that you're looking out for them and that you want their best interest.
