What is one lesson you have learned that has proven significant in your career?

The one lesson that's proven significant in my career has been to be of service. There is virtue in being of service. Again, we're always trying to create value for our client.

But if, let's say, the scope of work that's been agreed upon is to just go and plant a garden, and that's simplifying it, I want to make sure that when we're there as a team, we clean the whole garden space. Even if there's a hose nearby that we didn't use, I want it to be put away neatly.

If they come out, I want to have a really good conversation with them and answer any questions they have. If we're leaving the house and they're arriving with grocery bags, we want to offer to help bring the bags in.

It's very easy to agree on a scope of work and complete that work. But taking it to the next level and just being of service to your client or your customer, and going a little bit outside the box to make that impression, I think, has been one of the most important lessons.

I try to instill that in the rest of my team as well. A customer will remember a good job you did, but they will remember more, and probably tell other friends about, the level of service that you provided and how helpful you were.

That's also the beginning to starting a relationship with your client. And that is hopefully a long-term relationship that continues to grow and expand. So I would say that's one of the most important lessons.
