What do you enjoy most about being in the agriculture industry?
Overall, we feed people, and I think that's a really beautiful thing to be able to do. There will always be people interested in food who may not have access to it. Providing the ability for people to grow food at home is huge to me and really rewarding.
The other thing that's really exciting about the industry as a whole is the renewed interest in agriculture. A couple hundred years ago, agricultural schools and universities were very popular. Farming was a common and valued job.
In the last 60 or 70 years, our economy transitioned. Farming became extremely mechanized and required less hands-on labor. Consequently, there's been less interest in agriculture and horticulture.
However, in the last five years, there's been a ton of renewed interest, possibly due to the farm-to-table movement and people being more interested in where their food comes from. I'm seeing many people my age and younger who are passionate about horticulture and agriculture. They are focused on transforming this industry for today. You see this in startups and in people joining established companies in the horticulture arena.
