What are some of the biggest challenges in your current role?
There are a couple of challenges, but they are very manageable. One of the first challenges is working in an international corporation. This means you'll be working with people all across the world.
Some colleagues may not have English as their first language or may be working in different time zones. You have to adjust to that and bridge that gap. For example, if there's a language barrier, you need to be able to understand how someone is explaining something and clearly explain your solution back to them.
Patience is key. You have to understand that there will be challenges along these lines, especially when working with teams globally.
One of the things you need to do is develop a schedule. For instance, I had to work with someone in the Netherlands and wake up around 3:00 or 4:00 AM to help a customer. You just have to be very flexible.
Broadcom tends to have a great work-life balance, but there will be times when you have to make sacrifices. These sacrifices are very heavily rewarded. Broadcom acknowledges when someone is working late hours and allows them extra time to rest or sleep in. This is one specific challenge.
Another challenge is working with very advanced technology. One of the hardest things about transitioning from college to a professional company is that much of what you learned in college is baseline knowledge. Now, you'll start learning about projects and technologies built over many years on top of what you already know.
Being able to sit down and understand how some of these technologies work can be a challenge, but it is a very rewarding one.
