What is one lesson that you have learned that has proven significant in your career?

The one lesson I've learned that has proven significant, even critical, in my career boils down to one thing: listen more than you speak. Listen wholeheartedly. That's the big rule I've learned.

When you do speak, be on point and articulate. In my agency, our messaging when we brief is that for a presentation, you should be brief and be gone. Put your points out there, don't wax on, and then be gone.

However, be ready to take questions. Before all of that, even before making a presentation, listen much more than you talk in any meeting or gathering. Take it in, weigh it, and then articulately make your point.
