What skills are most important for a job like yours?
For a job like mine, communication is key. Really, some of the necessary skills are communication, strategic thinking, and project management.
Communication is my top skill because I spend a chunk of my time communicating with different stakeholders. I communicate with team leads, top managers, and my peers. I also collaborate with copywriters and graphic designers.
You need to communicate clearly and effectively so that work isn't redone. This happens when your ask isn't clear or you're unsure of what you're talking about. Communication is critical to ensure things move along smoothly.
When someone presents an idea, ask what it means and what they are requesting. This ensures you're sure and don't spend time doing the wrong thing. Asking the right questions is very important.
Another skill is strategic thinking and analytical analysis. I'm doing marketing, but I need to know how my work impacts the company's bottom line. I need to understand if my social media posts reach the right audience and how many people they reach.
Customer conversion rates are also important. I need to understand that the work I'm doing is bringing in sales for the company. Strategic thinking isn't just about executing tasks or making flyers; it's about understanding how your work impacts profitability and attracts new customers.
Lastly, project management skills are essential. I work with many people and stakeholders, juggling many things at once. I'm a multitasker, so project management is quite important.
You might be managing a project in the medical field or air defense, or a tech export. The ability to multitask and prioritize tasks is important to ensure business continues despite many ongoing activities. Time management is also crucial.
So, my three main skills are communication, strategic thinking, and project management.
