As a Greek American, how has that impacted how you've navigated your career?

When you grow up as a Greek American and are involved in the Greek American and Greek culture, we have a concept, a word called "philotimo." It translates into English as a "friend of honor."

It's pretty important in the culture. You want to do what's right in the world and help people. Of course, when you grow up with a Greek name, you're always told about Socrates and Aristotle and the classical philosophers.

We found out that it wasn't perfect back then. They, like a lot of people in prior epics, didn't do everything perfectly. But they did stress the idea that relates to philotimo in ancient Greece, in Athens where democracy and the jury trial developed.

Socrates and other philosophers were asking, "What is justice?" So that's what you get when you grow up as a Greek American. I think that has influenced me, as well as going to Berkeley.
