What skills are most important for a project manager?
Communication is huge. People skills are huge. It's knowing how to read people and understanding how to get them to do what you want, essentially.
I like to call it saying construction every single day. You're convincing someone to do what they don't want to do, so it's understanding how to work with people.
Communicating things change. Sometimes you'll start your day with Plan A, and then by 3:00 PM you'll be on Plan C. So keeping the communication stream going, keeping everyone in the loop, making sure you know everything that's going on.
Things change constantly, so you really need strong communication skills. Attention to detail is also important. You need to understand what little things happen. We deal in the business of inches and quarter inches, so everything matters. All details are important.
Finally, I think just the willingness to learn. We have a project engineer right now who's great. He's constantly asking questions. It's super important to take the time to ask the question and understand what you're doing, and that's how you learn.
