What entry-level positions in this field might an undergraduate college student consider?
Within the sales field, you'll find many positions with a "development representative" title. This could be business development, sales development, or lead development, and while the titles vary, it's essentially an entry-level sales role.
I've seen these as internships before. Often, companies prefer someone full-time. This role takes individuals with no prior sales experience and teaches them how to start.
The initial focus is on working through leads, understanding what questions to ask, and getting a basic grasp of the general problem a company is trying to solve. You then pass that information to someone with more experience.
Think of the sales process as five steps. You handle the first step and then hand it off to a more experienced colleague to complete the remaining four. These positions are very common.
The nice thing about these roles is that the base pay is usually decent. If you are successful and hit your targets, there's also significant commission and bonus potential.
This is something you can start anywhere. Simply pick a company you're interested in, and chances are they have an entry-level position you could fill, either as an undergraduate or right after graduation.
