What are your main responsibilities within your current role?

That's an excellent question. To give you some background, as I mentioned in the first question, we work with Meals on Wheels and PET Services. Many people ask what these two initiatives have in common.

For many homebound older adults or Meals on Wheels clients, their pets are a significant source of comfort and companionship. However, older adults facing financial or mobility challenges can also struggle with caring for their pets.

Additionally, Meals on Wheels providers across the country heard from their volunteers and staff that clients were sometimes feeding their delivered meals to their pets. In response, many providers, in nearly all 50 states, created PET programs.

These programs provide pet food, access to veterinary care, and other services to help older adults keep their pets at home with them. As part of this work, we provide grants. In 2022 alone, we dispersed over $1.1 million in grants to Meals on Wheels Providers.

We also develop resources, conduct research, and support storytelling efforts for Meals on Wheels programs. Overall, we work with about 500 programs nationwide. Much of this work is funded and supported by our partner, PetSmart Charities.

So, my main responsibilities in this role are broken down into three areas. First, I work with grantees and Meals on Wheels providers to support their pet services and programs.

Second, I collaborate with PetSmart Charities to report our impacts, successes, and any barriers or challenges we encounter. Third, I report back to my organization, Meals on Wheels America, on our ongoing initiatives, pilot programs, and their outcomes.

Because we receive substantial funding from PetSmart Charities, we have the flexibility to experiment and try new things. Reporting these findings back to my team and the larger organization allows them to potentially replicate successful aspects within other Meals on Wheels provider services. It's a busy but rewarding role.
