How Identity Has Influenced An Assistant Editor Career At Warner Bros Discovery

Morgan, an Assistant Editor at Warner Bros. Discovery, learned early in the film industry that "it's really important to speak confidently and be assertive," especially as a woman, to counteract the tendency of others to overlook or talk over female voices. This assertive approach, matching the confidence often seen in male colleagues, has been crucial for career navigation.

As a young woman working in film, how has that impacted how you've navigated your career?

I think I learned pretty early on from some women who are editors that it's really important to speak confidently and be assertive when sharing an idea. Oftentimes, there's a tendency for higher-ups, males, and others who are working with you, perhaps older than you, to not necessarily take you seriously or to talk over you in certain settings.

So, it's just important to really have that confidence in your voice and go that extra mile to be that assertive person you can be. That assertiveness is within you, even if you're not always feeling 100% confident.

I think it comes more naturally to males to hold that position in the way they talk and move through the world. So, we just have to kind of match that energy when working amongst others. And then always keeping it professional is really the best you can do.
