What skills are most important for a job like Peers?
The most important skill for a project manager in real estate development is staying organized. There are so many small things that all have to line up. You really have to start from a place of assuming that the details matter, because they really do.
One number off on a spreadsheet, or a couple percentage points on a deal, could make the difference between getting a funding award and not. So, you really have to be detail-oriented and cannot miss deadlines. You have to be able to keep track of all of it.
Being able to ask the right questions is also important. I work with people with specialized skill sets, like architects and government agency bureaucrats. They all operate in their own worlds with different assumptions.
Asking the right questions helps me understand what these specialists are talking about. Being able to understand quickly and learn quickly is also very important. Essentially, knowing what questions to ask is key.
Lastly, and this is tied to the last point, being able to talk to a wide range of people is crucial. I talk to everyone from bankers to general contractors on the construction site. I’m talking about wall assemblies, piping, and plumbing.
I think being able to put on a lot of different hats, talk to different people, and know the right things to say in different contexts are the most important skills.
