Favorite Parts Of Being An Assistant Professor At University Of California Riverside
Michael, an Assistant Professor at UC Riverside, most enjoys the teaching aspect's ability to "connect with students" and provide "marketable skills," while research allows the flexibility to pursue personally important topics like "what policy tools are effective for getting high-quality teachers to disadvantaged students," a long-standing issue in the United States. This demonstrates a commitment to both student development and impactful research aligned with past experiences like Teach for America.

What do you enjoy most about your current role? On the teaching side.
I really like connecting with students and giving them a different perspective to think about things. In the research methods class, I give them the tools they can use to develop marketable skills, but also to pursue things they're interested in on the research side.
I like the flexibility of being able to study what I want and things that I think are important. Right now, I'm researching, tying back to my Teach for America experience, what policy tools are effective for getting high-quality teachers to disadvantaged students. This is something our country has been working on for a long time without much success or progress.
I like that flexibility to pursue what I'm interested in and what I think is important.
