What skills are most important for a job like yours?
I would say definitely a strong communicator, both written and verbally. So much of the job revolves around writing pitches, talking to journalists, and sending emails.
People in public relations are most likely talkative and enjoy meeting new people. You'll often meet strangers you've never talked to before. If you can get comfortable with someone quickly and know how to pitch well, that's really helpful for the job.
Usually, at most agencies, you're working on multiple clients. You have to be pretty good at organizing because I'm constantly switching between different clients all day long. I have to be organized to keep myself on track.
You're never really just focusing on one client. People in public relations often wear a bunch of different hats. If you're adaptable, you can just put one thing down and pick up another thing quickly. Multitasking is a big key.
We also do a lot of presentations when pitching new business and getting new clients. Someone that's great with public speaking or speaking to a group of people and has strong presentation skills is always a plus.
Honestly, people with go-getter attitudes are great. A lot of things come up, and people will just raise their hands for different projects.
