How would you describe people who typically thrive in this industry?
You have to let part of your life be public. I hate to say that, and I know many people prioritize privacy. Some things in your life should remain private, but as a public figure, you're constantly interacting with the public.
People want to know about you; they want to get to know you. I believe the people who thrive in this industry are those you feel you could sit down and have coffee with anytime. Even if you're just meeting them for the first time or after a year of watching them report on your local or national news, you feel like they're part of the family.
Success, I think, is when people trust you enough, without even knowing you, by you simply being your authentic, true self. They choose to watch you instead of other stations, or you become one of their favorite personalities. That, to me, is a lot of success.
It also takes a lot of work and sacrifice. Anyone who claims they just worked their way to the top easily, or that everything was handed to them, is making it seem better than it is. I've had as many failures as successes. I've given up a lot of my free time and countless hours to dedicate to working on my brand and who I am.
The most successful people also stay humble. They know they might be great at their craft, and others might think they're the best, but they don't boast about it. You have to be real with people and be honest.
Truthful and honest people say what they do. When I say that, I mean someone who, when you watch them on the news, is the same person you meet in the community. Their morals and values, which they share, are the same ones you see reflected in their actions.
I think those are the most authentic people. Authenticity is so important. It's about someone not being afraid to voice their opinion but also being respectful. You can't just say whatever you want to be popular. You need a reason, and you must respect that others will have their own opinions.
So, I think having passion, drive, and never, ever giving up, no matter how tough things get, is key.
