What does a day in the life of a director of operations look like?

A day in the life is truthfully very meeting-heavy. Something that I've had to come to terms with over the course of my career is that my work is not really my direct output. It is my advisement, my feedback, my support, and mentorship of other people to do their work.

So, I don't have a ton of time to sit down at a computer and work on a personal project. I'm more so hopping on a meeting with someone for a project that they're working on and giving them feedback, supporting them, helping to structure and strategize with them about the goal of what something should look like.

This comes in the form of a lot of one-on-ones. I participate with other leaders within the organization to ensure our teams are all working towards the same goals, moving towards where we need to get to.

One thing that I would say does come up fairly often is if there is any sort of escalation of any kind. Clients are dissatisfied with the work that we're doing, or something goes wrong technically, or human error, or things like that. That's usually where I would come in and work with the individual or individuals to support them in how to problem-solve that challenge, move through it, and find a resolution.

So luckily, every day is different, which is fun for me to have variety and exposure to different things. It can definitely be unpredictable, but I try to keep my day as open as possible to roll with the punches.
