Favorite Parts of Working in the Recruitment Industry as a Senior Consultant

Megan, a Senior Consultant at Piper Maddox, finds the biggest challenge in recruiting to be the unpredictable nature of the work, with "high highs and low lows," because the outcome depends on many factors outside of their control, such as candidates' and clients' decisions. This inherent uncontrollability is difficult but also a source of immense reward when placements are successful.

What is your biggest challenge in your current role?

I think any sales job has high highs and low lows, but especially recruiting. In any other sales job, you're selling a product, and you only need to control one side of it: the client or the person you're selling to. You own the product, so you know what it does.

With recruiting, you're selling people. You're working with people, and we're selling people's skillsets for jobs. A lot of it is out of our control. We can't control what other people do.

We can't make someone take a job, like a job, or accept an offer for a certain amount of money. We can't make a client hire someone. A lot of it is out of our control, even though there are many things we can do to try and influence it. That's why we do all this training.

There are many things in our control that can help, but ultimately, it's out of our hands. I think that's the hardest part. You can work so hard to find the best candidate or do everything right, and it still might not work out, and there's nothing you can do about it.

But on the flip side, when it does work out, it's so rewarding. You feel really good about it. So, while the high highs and low lows are challenging, I actually like that aspect.

I think that's the most challenging part, but also one of the better parts of the job.
