What skills are most important for a job like yours?
Leadership has many different facets. Leaders in organizations often have a varying degree of these facets, with some being strong in certain areas and others strong in others.
I find you really need a good balance to avoid glaring holes in your business. For example, you need to be strong at analyzing and interpreting data. Understanding your business is fundamental to a sales role, so being able to dig into that is key.
On the flip side, you also need to be an excellent orator with strong language and communication skills. You need to communicate clearly with your team and customers on the frontline who may escalate. You have to refine those sales skills and be able to deescalate.
A lot of these skills, like business acumen and how you use your voice, are really key. Brain communication is also very important in leadership. One lesson I learned early is that you are always responsible for how your message is interpreted, not how you intended it.
How your people take your message is your responsibility, and you have to be clear. This clarity needs to come through vocally and in written form. You must be precise, accurate, and ensure they are handling those skills.
All these things combined are key skills for leading effectively. This includes interpreting your business correctly and ensuring your people are inspired, motivated, and happy to do their job. These are softer skills, but they are some of the most crucial things you need to be strong at.
