What A Freelance Digital Marketing Specialist Wishes They Had Known Before Entering The Digital Marketing Industry

Matt wishes someone had emphasized the importance of being quick on one's feet, as there will be many times as a digital marketing specialist where one does not know the answer but is still expected to provide insights in client meetings; therefore, Matt recommends gaining experience through public speaking, even suggesting "open mics and do standup" to prepare for potentially unreceptive audiences. Although told to be prepared, Matt wishes "the level of learning" required to interact with diverse clients and questions was further emphasized before entering the industry.

What have you learned about this role that you wish someone had told you before you entered the industry?

One of the things I wish someone had told me is that there will be times when you don't know the answer. You'll be in meetings, people will be asking you questions, and you'll simply not know.

There will be difficult conversations, and you'll have to think quickly on your feet. I was told this a few times, but I never truly grasped the level of learning involved in interacting with so many different clients and questions.

As you're constantly responding, you develop the ability to speak and work quickly. People say this all the time, but there's no real way to fully understand it without experiencing it.

So, what I wish someone had told me before entering the industry is to do a lot of public speaking. Perhaps go to open mics or try stand-up comedy. That kind of environment really trains you to think on your feet, especially in front of people who may not be receptive to what you're saying. Getting that public speaking experience is great for being able to think quickly and get your point across.
