What skills are most important for a job like yours?

That's a great question. I always love to quote Walt Whitman on this: "Be curious and not judgmental."

In marketing, especially as a freelance marketer, you're always learning. Each client might have a different problem or nuance. Even if two clients need SEO strategy, it might be similar but never exactly the same.

Someone might want four blogs a week, while another might prefer one blog focusing on higher-quality, more creative content. The type of creative they want can also be more nuanced.

So, I'd say you have to be a sponge. That's key in any role in marketing, but especially in the freelance area. You'll never stop being a student of marketing; you'll consistently be learning.

On top of that, keeping yourself accountable is crucial. While that's a general statement for any role, you especially have to hold yourself accountable in freelance when you're on your own.

And never stop networking. Outside of your workday and your regular creative tasks, always be connecting with people. A lot of my experiences in marketing have been with people I've networked with.

I've ended up working with or for them. My current clients are people I've interacted with along my journey from college to now.

Those are some of the key skills: networking, keeping yourself accountable, and always, always be learning.
