What have you learned about this role that you wish someone had told you before you entered the industry?

I think the most important thing I tell young people is to identify lifelong mentors. These mentors should know you for your character and help you align what you want out of life and your career with what you're doing.

If you have a great college professor who takes an interest in you, nurture that relationship. They can help you get your first research internship or your first undergraduate publication.

Similarly, if a mentor at an internship takes an interest in you, nurture that relationship. These points in your life are bifurcations where you choose a path.

Often, these choices aren't just based on research or a gut feeling. A mentor might say, "I think you would be an amazing artist" or "You would be an amazing dermatologist. Come rotate with me for two weeks and be my right arm." This excitement can solidify your chosen path.

Having mentors cheering you on helps you through the bumps in the road. When you face overwhelming challenges, like a mountain you can't climb or a standardized exam you dread studying for, mentors behind you will help you get through those moments. I always reflect on the different people who helped me along the way to get where I am.
