Significant Career Lesson From a Physician at Advanced Dermatology of Oregon

Maeran, a physician, learned that setbacks—even harsh criticism like being told "you don't have what it takes"—should not define a career path; the most important lesson is to maintain resilience and focus, finding "a path forward" despite failures, viewing setbacks as opportunities for redirection towards one's goals.

What is one lesson that you have learned that has proven significant in your career?

The most important lesson I've learned is how to navigate situations when things don't go as planned. This includes feeling like you've disappointed someone, yourself, or received negative feedback on your performance. I've even had someone tell me I didn't have what it takes to become a physician.

Despite setbacks, there's always a path forward. So, don't get discouraged if you have a vision for your life, whether it's becoming a physician, dentist, journalist, or anything else you desire. Don't let anyone else's opinion define you.

You can always find a way to reach your goals. This requires resilience, focus, and dedication. If you don't do well on a standardized exam, take it again or enroll in a prep course to improve your score.

Even with a disappointing exam score, there are still schools that will accept you. I'm confident there's a place for everyone as long as they demonstrate dedication, motivation, focus, and the drive to achieve their aspirations.

Ultimately, don't let failures bring you down. Instead, view them as opportunities to succeed in a different direction that will lead you to your final destination.
