What are your main responsibilities within your role today?
My main responsibilities are a little different than when I first started, mainly because we've grown so much. Today, I manage about five full-time staff.
I manage all our programming across Sacramento. This includes a large youth program with many elementary school partnerships. We also have our own facility downtown that we operate as a business, our social enterprise.
We staff this facility and run leagues and events. This generates revenue for us and connects us to the community, letting people know who we are.
Additionally, I manage and oversee the homeless adult program. This program is for adults who have recently experienced homelessness, coming out of rehab. It's a second chance program designed to connect them to the community, provide skills for health, and ultimately lead to employment and education.
I oversee all these things daily. As a nonprofit, most of our revenue comes from fundraising, grants, or sponsorships. We have to be creative in generating revenue because we don't sell a product.
The mission of Street Soccer USA is to make the game more accessible and break down barriers. This means we don't charge anyone for our programs. We give everything away, but we do pay employees and want to create employment opportunities.
Therefore, I spend a lot of time strategizing on how to get funding. I also train our staff, coach them, and ensure we have a good culture. I don't have to do the day-to-day deliverables like coaching or running the park or leagues as much anymore.
I get to focus on bigger areas, like managing our board of directors. However, I'm still very involved in the day-to-day things because that's what I love most. Essentially, it's a ton of problem-solving and always trying to secure funding.
