Main Responsibilities of an Advocate at The Veterans Defense Project

Lindsey's role at the Veterans Defense Project involves ensuring the organization's operational health, including communication with stakeholders and managing day-to-day tasks. This supports the organization's mission to advocate for policies that connect veterans with resources to address "invisible injuries" like trauma and mental illness, helping them access "counseling, intensive rehabilitation, and…community" rather than incarceration.

What are your main responsibilities within your current role?

My current role is working in operations for a nonprofit organization. This nonprofit has a mission to educate and better the community.

The organization's specific mission is to advocate for laws and policies that help military veterans get the resources they need to heal from injuries suffered during war. We understand that when military members return from war, they often have invisible injuries.

Some may have lost a limb, but others may appear physically unharmed. However, they may have suffered trauma and could be experiencing psychological or mental illness.

Because of this reality, our organization advocates for resources so that veterans aren't thrown into prison for misusing drugs or alcohol to cope. Instead of being caged and not getting help, we want to change laws and policies.

This would allow veterans to connect with resources like counseling, intensive rehabilitation, and recuperation. Most importantly, they would find community and know they are not alone.

In my current role, I ensure our organization, the Veterans Defense Project, can do everything it needs to be healthy. This includes communication with board members, founders, and potential donors.

I also schedule meetings, take notes, and generally ensure the organization's operations are flowing. We stay on task and accomplish the goals set by the board.
