What do you enjoy most about being in law enforcement?
One of the things I enjoy the most is the desire across the board to constantly learn. There's a huge necessity to stay up to date on current case law and changing policies. This is important because it affects our interactions with the public and how we enforce the law.
We also have the ability to interact with a broad range of people. I'll refer back to my previous job as a teacher. While I interacted with a diverse population of fifth graders from all backgrounds, it wasn't hugely diverse. At a large university, you interact with all different types of people.
As I mentioned, there's never a dull day. Every day is different, and you never know what you're going to get. There's really no typical day. This might be frustrating to some, but I enjoy the fact that there's a basic routine with moments of excitement where you don't know what's going to happen.
With police work in general, there are so many different opportunities for growth and experiences. It's very different from a typical office job. Throughout your career, you could be a canine officer, a motor officer, work in a leadership position, or on the range.
You could also work in an administrative or community policing position. There are tons of other positions I'm not even thinking of right now. There's so much opportunity for growth and for different personalities to flourish and thrive in the same general environment.
