What does a day in the life of an executive director for a leadership development program look like?
In the mornings, I typically serve as a guest speaker in our leadership training classes. I might present a case study or share my career journey as an example for the leaders and managers attending.
We really focus on teaching good communication skills. This includes inviting other guest speakers and incorporating activities where small groups discuss recently introduced topics. I believe this approach reinforces the thinking and learning for all our leaders and managers.
After each course, we conduct an evaluation. This gives me a good sense of what resonates with people and what doesn't. We then modify the program for the next class based on these insights.
I also spend a lot of time coaching managers and leaders in the city through individual sessions. They might come to me at a point in their careers where they've been in a department for three to five years and are unsure of their next steps.
Having worked in the city for 20 to 25 years across five separate departments, I can offer advice on navigating city employment and pursuing new roles while staying within the city. Our goal is to retain our best employees.
The city, with its 40 separate departments, functions as one single employer. This structure allows employees to grow their careers and remain within the city.
