What have you learned about this role that you wish someone would have told you before you entered the industry?
That's a good question. I think because I transitioned from a completely different industry, the nonprofit world, many people are dedicated but burn out quickly.
One key difference is how slowly the wheels of government move compared to the private sector. A special district, especially a small one like ours with 35 staff members, can be more nimble and adapt faster.
However, in higher levels of federal and state government, things move very slowly, making it hard to make an impact. Here, you have much more ability to make a difference through your contributions, which I appreciate.
While it can be frustrating when things don't move faster, adjusting your pace reveals certain benefits. Since we are doing the people's work, getting it right is crucial. I just have to slow my roll.
