A Day In The Life Of A Senior Financial Analyst At Dexcom

A senior financial analyst role at Dexcom involves a dual focus, split between closing the books and forecasting, with a specialization in revenue and commercial finance; during the close, work focuses on analyzing revenue performance against forecasts, delving into price volume mix ("PVM") to understand drivers behind the numbers, while outside of close, automation and forecasting take precedence, especially FX analysis. The work includes dissecting performance across regions, from the US to international markets, and involves both surface-level insights and detailed analysis, such as understanding the impact of "torn exchange" rates.

What does a day in the life of a senior financial analyst look like?

In my role in FP&A commercial finance, there's the process of closing the books, which takes up about two weeks of the month. The remaining two weeks are for activities outside of close.

During close, which is around now, we review the numbers in our financial systems. We analyze how our current figures compare to the prior quarter, the prior year, and our current forecast. My specific role focuses on revenue.

I track our revenue performance and also look at patient volume. Dexcom is a global company, and while the US is a significant market, we're increasingly focusing on our international business. This can get very detailed, especially within Europe, which has many countries.

We might use cluster views, looking at regions like southern Europe or the Middle East. There are many ways to analyze the data, and it's easy to stay at a surface level. However, I perform a price volume mix analysis, or PBM.

This analysis helps break down performance within each region. Instead of just stating that US revenue is up by $5 million, we can determine if this increase is due to more people buying the product, price increases, or other factors. It can even include currency exchange impacts, like the current weaker US dollar.

This PBM analysis helps us dissect all the contributing factors without getting lost in the noise between different countries. So that's what I do during close. Outside of close, a significant part of any FP&A role involves automation.

This is important to ensure accuracy during critical deliverable periods. Automation is a big focus now, especially with AI, allowing us to create formulas that simplify our work. Within my revenue-focused role, forecasting is also a major task.

Once we finalize the books and reports, we shift our attention to the rest of the month and quarter. Additionally, as I mentioned, foreign exchange analysis is a significant area of focus right now, and it's something I also work on.
