How would you describe people who typically thrive in their industry?
People in the consulting industry need to stay calm under pressure and not mind when things change. I think there's a lot of change there.
Frequently, you might work hard on a deliverable, like a set of slides you're proud of, only to have the whole thing scrapped. You then start over, changing direction for one reason or another. People who can easily let that go, learn from it, and move on tend to thrive. I've seen people for whom that's really hard.
There's a lot of pressure, too. Clients want things really fast, and they want excellence all the time. Being able to stay calm through that is really important. It's also important to be able to see the impact.
It's not all glamorous. There are times you're just responding to emails, working on spreadsheets, moving boxes on slides, and reminding yourself why you're doing it. Remembering your contribution to the team is really important. People who can keep that impact in mind do well.
