I am a Salesforce lead. It's a step above a Salesforce administrator.
Salesforce administrators are the more common term. They generally manage the entire Salesforce instance, typically with a junior administrator or two under them.
They manage the entire instance, from security and who can log in, to the user interface and how end-users interact with the platform. This includes constantly releasing new features and improving things, whether that's a new checkbox field, a new dashboard for an executive, or a new automation that sends an email.
There are countless things you can do on the platform, so a Salesforce administrator oversees these. People who typically thrive have two buckets of skills: hard skills and soft skills.
Hard skills include being able to design a process using tools like Lucid or Visio, which visually map out problems and processes. They also need deep product knowledge to understand the platform, not just what can be done, but what should be done and what's best practice.
Soft skills are also really important, such as listening to fully understand a problem and attention to detail. This ensures security is in place, the platform is working well, and documentation is done. Problem-solving is also key, which involves understanding the problem and finding the best solution.
