What is one lesson that you've learned that has proven significant in your career?
Having a mentor is so important in my career. I know it's true for others as well. Even if those mentors weren't in my industry, having someone to bounce ideas off of and that support is hugely important.
I've been grateful to have numerous mentors throughout my career. It's helped me not only land several jobs through their connections. Sometimes it just helps to have a more senior person send a quick email that says, "Hey, I believe in this person."
It's also helped me succeed in those jobs. Everyone faces challenges throughout their career, and having someone who's been through it is so important.
If you can find a mentor, reach out to your alumni network. Don't be shy; most people want to help.
Finding them is one part, and I find it so important to keep in touch with them. I also love helping other people who are younger than me or who want to work in the nonprofit space or in Salesforce.
What stands out to me is who follows up and who doesn't. I make an effort to follow up, even if someone put my name in for a job and I didn't get it. I'll say, "Hey, thanks again. It didn't work out, but I really appreciate the help."
So, number one: find a mentor. Don't be shy. Don't be afraid to outline what you need and what you're looking for.
Number two: keep in touch with them. Keep them close. They're going to want you to succeed and they're going to want to follow you on this journey.
