Biggest Challenges Faced by a Director of Product Marketing at Meta

Kati's biggest challenge as Meta's Director of Product Marketing is managing the "breadth and depth and complexity" of a rapidly expanding advertising portfolio across multiple apps, including the recently launched Threads. This requires Kati to leverage a team's expertise and adapt their approach from being "the defacto expert in everything" to strategically focusing on areas needing additional knowledge.

What is your biggest challenge in your current role?

When I started at Meta, almost 13 years ago, the app looked very different. We had two advertising placements: you could run ads on the right-hand side, if you remember when everyone accessed Facebook on desktop, or you could run ads in the feed.

13 years later, we have multiple apps, including the recently launched Threads, and many different advertising features. Our portfolio continues to grow. The biggest challenge is maintaining both the breadth and depth of the portfolio while reacting to changes in real time.

I've had to rely on my ability to trust my management team and my individual contributors. I use their baseline understanding along with my knowledge of the product to determine where I need to build or expand my knowledge if things reach a critical point. This is very different from being the de facto expert in everything. It's been a different skill to develop over time.
